CHief Matenge’s Character Sketch Essay Essays

Boss Matenge’s Character Sketch Essay Essays Boss Matenge’s Character Sketch Essay Boss Matenge’s Character Sketch Essay This task depends on Bessie Head’s legitimate novel. At the point when Rain Clouds Gather. It gives an evaluation of one of the novel’s boss characters. Boss Matenge and in the strategy uncovered him as a without a doubt degenerate pioneer. This is upheld by the many interlaced realities and references that depict his character as such a pioneer and these are chosen and introduced from the novel. Byrne. Kalua. Scheepers and Kane ( 2012:100 ) give the establishment to the reader’s understanding that Chief Matenge is a degenerate head which in twist shapes the entire antagonistic situation of his character when they portray him as stand foring the â€Å"Old Africa† at the very least †moral devolution. Going through the entire novel the peruser fights lastly loses the contention in happening wherever where any positive impressions are related with Chief Matenge. Bryne et Al ( 2012:100 ) present Matenge as a â€Å"villain. an awful person who is straightforwardly corrupt† . He is certain the foe and the foe of Gilbert Balfour and Makhaya who overall represent great for the sake of progression and improvement in the novel. Head ( 1987:18 ) presents Chief Matenge as Paramount Chief Sekoto’s â€Å"troublesome and disliked more youthful brother† . This as of now gives the peruser an idea of what sort of character Chief Matenge has. This portrayal of him establishes the pace in the entire novel as he is farther depicted using such descriptors and expressions as â€Å"overwhelming avariciousness† and â€Å"unpleasant personality† . ( Head 1987:18 ) . It in a matter of seconds becomes obvious that Chief Matenge’s sibling. Principal Chief Sekoto does non wish his ain sibling. as the announcement â€Å"nothing troubled Chief Sekoto in excess of a visit from his sibling. whom he had since quite a while ago delegated having a place with the crazy segment of mankind† ( Head 1987:48 ) obviously appears. Central Chief Sekoto is said to hold at any point agreed with residents who his sibling constantly irritated. Head ( 1987:18 ) nowadayss Matenge as holding a â€Å"devil† that drove him and would decrease after some chastening from Chief Sekoto simply to stir its â€Å"clamouring and howling† a couple of months in this way. Matenge’s underhanded is farther unfurled in the need of Chief Sekoto to destruct him for â€Å"all the family unit quarrels and maneuvers he had instigated† ( Head 1987:20 ) . Unexpectedly. Central Chief Sekoto was non what one would name a sparkling delineation of ethical quality. Boss Sekoto. â€Å"although he was generally known as a decent chief† ( Head 1987:19 ) only like his sibling Matenge â€Å"lived off the slave work of the hapless and his territories were furrowed for nothing out of pocket by the hapless. furthermore, he was washed. washed and taken care of by the poor† ( Head 1987:19 ) . In twist Matenge other than unequivocally loathed his sibling Paramount Chief Sekoto. Head ( 1987:42 ) unveils this when she uncovers his thoughts regarding his sibling who he in mystery thought was â€Å"an friendly. lovely blockhead of a sibling in the preeminent spot. Matenge desired is brother’s spot of Paramount Chief. Matenge is alluded to as â€Å"evil† on many occasions in the novel. Dinorego farther uncovered this evilness or corruptness when he trusts in Makhaya that he ( Matenge ) was the malevolent power confining headway in the unassuming community. Dinorego uncovers Matenge’s interests to â€Å"damage† and â€Å"delay† the beginning of the ranch and the cowss co-employable which are endeavors that should constrain advancement in the unassuming community. Matenge is said to hold unconventionally disrupted Gilbert Balfour on the cowss co-usable in light of the fact that he was expressly benefitting from buying the hapless villagers’ cowss at a low money related worth and doing colossal overall gains by so selling them at an a lot higher fiscal worth. Matenge exploited the hapless villagers’ failure to draw in railroad trucks to ship their ain cowss in light of the fact that they could non manage the cost of it. Matenge battled Gilbert Balfour’s cows co-usable in light of the fact that it would set him out of concern. Matenge’s falsities and cleverness are unmistakably depicted when he deceives the residents that Gilbert needed to oppress them. â€Å"Was it genuine they needed to cognize. that Gilbert had stealthily bought land from the central Chief and was using the name co-employable to subjugate the individuals? That was what Chief Matenge had told them† ( Head 1987:35 ) . The peruser would non falter to mark Matenge as ravenous and egotistical. Head ( 1987:41 ) uncovers that Matenge lived altogether ( before Joas Tsepe went along with him ) in a â€Å"big cream-painted mansion† . Different locals are said to hold lived in pretty much nothing and unrefined earth cottages and were in reality non permitted to develop block houses without authorization from the Chief which was only occasionally given. in the event that by any means. Head ( 1987:41 ) proceeds to advert that the cardinal modest community where Matenge’s indication of the zodiac was arranged contained â€Å"one extremely hapless general dealer’s store which provided the townspeople with the â€Å"bare necessities† wish sugar. tea and â€Å"cheap stuffs and shoes† among different focuses. The area of Matenge’s â€Å"big mansion† was other than in propinquity to a â€Å"three-lives shack† which fills in as the modest community grade school. The shaking difference of Matenge’s clearly luxurious life way and his milieus sickens the peruser and talks so anyone might hear of his smelliness and self-centeredness. The peruser can securely impugn Matenge of being a tribalist. Byrne et Al ( 1987:100 ) depict tribalism as the example of advancing one’s ain society above others and making a decision about others on the balance of their inborn beginnings. Matenge is portrayed as a â€Å"die troublesome traditionalist† ( Head 1987:42 ) . He needed things to remain the equivalent. He is said to hold got tribalism and that it was â€Å"essentially the guideline of the unskilled grown-up male who when he was in the mass. dreaded and detested whatever was non a part of the horrifying murkiness wherein he lived† . ( Head 1987:65 ) further depicts his appall for different people when he is said to hold excused Dinorego’s perceiving eventually with a â€Å"slight motion of the caput which contained in it a legacy of hundreds of years of scorn for the common grown-up male. † His precarious and timeserving relationship with Joas Tsepe is another exposure of Matenge’s unbalanced and degenerate character. Joas Tsepe was other than degenerate and this is uncovered in the benefactor that was covered in mystery who provided him with cash which empowered him to remain jobless and to go at regular intervals via air as an extremely of import person. Matenge other than has xenophobic tendencies. His need to trail Makhaya out of the humble community extremely much possessed an aroma like this. This is uncovered when George Apple-by trusts in Makhaya that Matenge needs him â€Å"removed† from the modest community since he is a displaced person. Outcasts were all around non preferred in Botswana at the clasp of the book’s puting when many originated from South Africa running off from Apartheid. however, Matenge’s particular disdain for Makhaya as a displaced person and all like him comes out when he alluded to him as a â€Å"South African pig who ever needs to pursue his master† ( Head 1987:66 ) . referencing to Makhaya’s shut relationship with Gilbert Balfour. To state Makhaya was comprehensively annoyed by this is putting it mildly for unbeknown to Matenge. he in mystery framed thoughts of killing him. In choice Head ( 1987:43 ) could non hold summarized Chief Matenge’s character better when she portrayed him as â€Å"the model of obscurity with his long melancholy. despairing. suspicious face and his interminable ruses. bitter green-peered toward beast and hatred† . Makhaya other than likens him to a few obnoxious focuses, for example, a â€Å"lout. darnel. Canis familiaris and pig and he figured the â€Å"Matenges everyplace got themselves into a spot over the poor† ( Head 1987:136 ) The peruser concurs with Mma Millipede when she delicately yet accidentally precisely predicts Chief Matenge’s passing. She attempts to calm Makhaya after his sensational brush with Chief Matenge where he is marked a South African pig and says. â€Å"People who blunder against human life like our Chief and the white grown-up male ( referencing to Apartheid in South Africa ) do so simply in light of the fact that they are more visually impaired than others to the conundrum of life. Some clasp life will find them and set them off for good or change them† ( Head 169:137 ) . In Chief Matenge’s example. he was unfortunate to non bear the later of these expectations. be that as it may, the previous. After he returns from a rather long nonappearance from the unassuming community. he in a split second returns to what he knows best and biddings Pauline and six humble community seniors to be attempted. Unbeknown to him. the entire humble community was energized that the twenty-four hours had shown up that they would go up against their â€Å"persecutor of numerous years† ( Head 169:184 ) . Since Matenge was non envisioning a group. he freezes. withdraws into the house. furthermore, rather than going up against the group. ends it all. what's more, the peruser finds another covered character that was creeping in Matenge from the beginning. cowardliness. Not even his retainers remain by him at his clasp of interest ; they beat a quick retreat and leave him to cover with his issues altogether and his eyes are opened and conceivably he in the long run observes himself for the beast that he is. The saddest segment is non even his sibling hushes up baffled by his demise. Boss Sekoto’s digest

By conducting a literature review, one verifies what else needsRead MoreNarrative Literature Reviews1589 Words   |  7 PagesNarrative literature reviews Introduction n A literature review is a comprehensive study and interpretation of the work that has been published on a particular topic n A literature review should convey the knowledge and ideas that have been established on a topic and their strengths and limitations Why undertake a literature review? n To provide a review of the current knowledge in a particular field n Provide a description of research studies n Identify gaps in current knowledge n Identify emergingRead MoreRole of Literature in Research1513 Words   |  7 Pages[pic]DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT THE ROLE OF LITERATURE REVIEW IN THE RESEARCH PROCESS A TERM PAPER PRESENTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE COURSE RESEARCH METHODS BY SIAW-ASAMOAH JOYCELYN Literature simply is a body of written works. Colombo Frozen Yogurt Case free essay sample

In 1994, General Mills Incorporated, a $6 billion consumer goods company, acquired Colombo Frozen Yogurt. General Mills Inc. (GMI) believed they could add Colombo frozen yogurt to their existing product lineup to increase net sales with little addition in marketing cost. Frozen yogurt is sold through two distinct segments – independent shops and impulse locations such as cafeterias, colleges, and buffets. Frozen yogurt is the main business for the shops whereas yogurt is incremental to the impulse locations’ main business. GMI’s large sales force already served the impulse market. The financial results in the first couple of years were mixed. Earnings increased slightly and then dropped each year even though sales volume was relatively flat. In total, merchandising costs dropped, while pricing promotion rates escalated. The GMI sales force focused on the impulse segments and pricing promotions were believed to be driving volume increases. However, volume in the shop segment declined at alarming rates and there was widespread dissatisfaction in the sales organization. We will write a custom essay sample on Colombo Frozen Yogurt Case or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page While GMI knew sales by segment, they didn’t track costs by segment. Instead costs were allocated based on sales dollars. The situation was ripe for a clearer look using ABC methods. Today’s Frozen Yogurt Market Structure: When Colombo Yogurt Company began marketing soft-serve frozen yogurt in the early 1980’s, their main distribution was through independent yogurt shops. In the early 90’s, they faced competition from franchise operations such as TCBY and Freshens that replaced many of the independent yogurt shops. And the market changed as Foodservice operators such as cafeterias, colleges, and buffets started to add soft-serve yogurt to their business. By the late 90’s, these Impulse locations accounted for 2/3 of the soft-serve market. In the late 90’s, Shop sales began to increase with the addition of distinctive new products such as smoothies, boosters, and granitas. The Shops make their living from the soft-serve business and must innovate or go out of business (as thousands have done in the last decade). On the other hand, the Impulse locations make their living from other items and the soft-serve trade is only performance topspin. These firms are unwilling to take any risk (new equipment or extra labor) to serve highly differentiated products like smoothies or granitas. The GMI-Colombo Marketing Plan: The GMI Foodservice Division markets brands such as Cheerios, Yoplait, Betty Crocker, Gold Medal Flour, Hamburger Helper, Pop-Secret, and Chex Snack to Food Management Firms, Hospitals, and schools. Colombo yogurt was added to this product lineup and the Foodservice sales force covered both Shop and Impulse locations. Salesforce: Colombo’s salesforce was merged into the Foodservice salesforce. Customers were reassigned to salespeople who already serviced that geographical area. The salespeople varied in their reaction to the product. Some found shops easy to sell to while others avoided the shops despite the possible lost commission. Many spent a lot of time helping their impulse customers understand how to use the machinery. Merchandising Promotions: Colombo traditionally charged the Shops for merchandising that was large scale and eye popping (neon signs). The Shops used these signs to draw customers inside. GMI chose not to charge for merchandising and to provide the same large scale merchandising to both Shops and Impulse locations. Shops were very interested in the kits while many Impulse locations didn’t even hang them up. Pricing Promotions: Pricing promotions are a mainstay of GMI’s impulse location approach. GMI’s salesforce generally used these promotion events as an opportunity to visit their accounts and take advantage of the occasion to meet service needs and sell other products that may not be featured. GMI made price promotions available to both segments of the market. While the deals were typically around $5 per case, they averaged $3 per case against all the volume shipped during the year. GMI marketing knew price was not a major decision factor for Shops and they did not target pricing promotions to them. However, Shops were aware of the promotions and took advantage of them.

And The Winner Is… Orange Bubble Power!

And The Winner Is†¦ Orange Bubble Power! And The Winner Is Orange Bubble Power! And The Winner Is Orange Bubble Power! By Daniel Scocco The Short Story Competition 2 has finally come to an end. The voting session last week was pretty interesting, with different stories taking the lead in different days, and in the end Orange Bubble Power won. Congratulations to Violet Toler! Both Violet and Easton Miller, the runner up, will get a free license to the executive edition of the WhiteSmoke writing software, which costs $310. Thanks WhiteSmoke for sponsoring the event as well. Finally, a big thank you to all the readers who supported the competition with their votes and comments. Below you will find the winning story once again. Orange Bubble Power by Violet Toler I love to write. I hate housework. However, some mundane chores just won’t wait. One look at the bathroom sink caused me to grab my trusty Orange Bubble Power Wipes dispenser. Too bad those cute little scrubbing bubbles from the commercial aren’t real. I’d love to let them do the job while I compose the next NY Times best seller. Might as well get it over, I thought, as I hurriedly opened the lid and snatched at the wipe. The tip tore off in my hand. Irritated, I pulled on the stub more forcefully this time. It ripped again. Grabbing the last smidgen that barely peeked through the slit, I yanked hard. Out came the rest of the wipe–unattached from the rest of the roll. The second wipe should have fed through the X-shaped cut in the plastic top. It didn’t. Impatiently I jerked the lid off to feed the darn wipe through from the underside. The orange lid was stiff and unyielding. â€Å"I don’t have time for this!† I grumbled. Accentuating my words with action, I vigorously crammed the wipe out the other side. That’s when my troubles began. One-half inch of my index finger now protruded through the hole with half a wipe. A stream of Orange Bubble Power Wipes drooped between my hand and the open container on the hamper. Try as I might, I couldn’t get free. I tugged and the blasted lid worked like Chinese handcuffs. The harder I pulled, the tighter it stuck. I twisted and turned, but remained trapped. Every movement sucked my fingertip in tighter still. Within minutes, sharp V-shaped points were digging into my flesh cutting off circulation. How humiliating. This situation was far beneath my dignity. After all, I was a professional woman. I couldn’t allow anyone to see me like this, especially Stephen, my proper gentleman husband. I was determined to solve this problem by myself in privacy. God knows I tried. I lathered my finger with soap. I pried. I twisted. I pulled. Nothing helped. Oh, gosh durn, I thought, this hideous contraption is going to eat me alive! Orange Bubble Power indeed! I wondered if my finger was only an appetizer for this plastic vampire. It appeared voracious. Panicked, I swallowed my pride and called for help. My urgent tone brought Stephen down the stairs two at a time. He burst through the bathroom door, out of breath. When I saw his concerned expression, I regretted frightening him. However, as he surveyed the situation, worry fell off his face so fast, I swear I heard it hit the floor. His dignified manner disappeared as his lips twitched, then his whole face rippled as he broke into laughter. This was no mere grin or snicker, but was a total knee-slapping belly laugh. I stood there, annoyed, humiliated, and in pain. He finally regained his composure, held my finger tight, and tried to unscrew the lid, so to speak. His plan went awry. So did my usually mild demeanor as I told him what I thought of his attempt. He poured half a bottle of liquid soap and some cooking oil over my finger. It added goop to the mess, but didn’t penetrate the orange grip of death. Imagining the worst, it dawned on me that my finger could die without blood. For all I knew, I could be facing amputation! Panicked, I ran through the house for my sewing shears. Ten feet of Bubble Power Wipes streamed behind like crepe paper from a Main Street parade. The empty container rolled onto the floor with a thump. With my left hand, I grabbed the scissors and tried to cut myself free. No luck. Stephen took over, but my scissors couldn’t grip the slimy lid. We tried again after rinsing, but the rigid material was unrelenting. So was the pain! Stephen headed for his basement workshop for tin snips leaving me helpless and alone for what seemed an eternity. By this point, I was ready to stoop to just about anything. I seriously considered dialing 911 with my good hand, all the while picturing the Jaws-of-Life rushing to my rescue. Stephen finally returned. I wailed shamelessly as he snipped at the blasted lid. Jagged points bit deeper with every clip. After several distressing snips, he pried the plastic apart and set me free. My poor finger had four pointed indentations that resembled tooth marks and a bloodlessly white tip. Other than that, I had escaped the Orange demon. My hero tried to manage a straight face. â€Å"What on God’s green earth were you trying to do?† â€Å"Believe me,† I pronounced grimly, â€Å"Those Scrubbing Bubbles may look cute on TV, singing their little high-pitched song, but don’t let them fool you. Those sweet grins hide sharp, powerful, orange teeth that are just waiting to attack! Lucky for me, you were here. They would have done their dirty deed, wiped up the mess, and you’d have never known what became of me.† He left the room muttering something about finding a support group for husbands of imaginative writers. Me? I headed for the computer to write this story one-handed. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Get a subscription and start receiving our writing tips and exercises daily! Dissertation Editing Paper

Dissertation Editing Paper Dissertation Editing Paper Dissertation Editing PaperWhy should you edit your paper or dissertation? The answer is evident: you will not have the second chance to make an impression on your teacher. It is your task to ensure that your dissertation writing is free of errors, mistakes, and inconsistencies. Editing is necessary to check the flow of ideas, thesis methodology, relevance of content, thesis format and all other issues which have strong impact on the quality of your work. So editing is about spelling, capitalization, grammar, word usage, content, etc. Dissertation Editing Paper MethodsThere are two methods of dissertation editing: self edit and peer edit.Self-Edit is done by yourself. You need to read your own dissertation backwards: start with the last sentence, then read the second last sentence, then move to the third last sentence, and so on. If each sentence makes sense, your dissertation is well-written. If it does not, you should revise it accordingly. Use your senses to identify places for improvement: do you see or hear any mistakes in your arguments, ideas, or statements? Peer-Edit is done in a group. Due to the fact that you are the author of your own paper, you may not notice many mistakes and as the result, may not be able to edit your dissertation effectively. Ask a couple of your friends or family members to read your dissertation (chapter by chapter, for example) and highlight the areas requiring your attention. Is argument clear? Are your points based on evidence? Dissertation Editing Paper TipsEvery sentence should have two essential parts: you should tell what/who the subject is and what is happening.Focus on easy to understand sentences but do not oversimplify, try to use different combinations of such words as but, or, yet, that, which, because, when, etc. Use commas and periods only where it is necessaryDo not abuse the exclamation mark!Check spelling of specific terms with the help of dictionaryDissertation Paper Editing ARRR TechniqueARRR techniqu e is one of the most effective editing tools. Public Private Lives and Emersons Clairvoyant Solution :: Education Teachers Teaching Essays

Public Private Lives and Emerson's Clairvoyant Solution My intelligence was sparked when exceptional people opened doors in my mind I didn't know needed light. And while my parents played a part in this I remember more strongly the hand that my teachers played in expanding my mind. Generally there are certain aspects of school that a student remembers but always there is a teacher. For me there were several, and I know I was lucky. I do remember some of the lessons, a few specific classes, but what I remember more is how they acted as people and not just as teachers. I recall the way they taught me silently through the examples they set in their lives. Teachers, by the sheer nobility of their positions, have this responsibility whether they desire it or not. The historical nature of teachers was to educate with an enormous focus on the morality of the students. Education often came directly from the bibles of the students and the religious doctrine the church had decreed. Teacher's primary goals were to create good and moral citizens. Churches many times were the origin of the school doctrine. Horace Mann states that one of the three most essential elements of being a teacher is "the ability to manage and govern a schoolroom and to mold moral character" (Spring, 127). Emma Willard was of a similar opinion. Spring writes, "Willard believed that development of character was the first aim of education and placed a great deal of emphasis on that and on moral virtues" (Spring, 126). At this time moral education was held superior to the "standard", non-moral education of a child. These "standard" subjects were taught only second to religion, which in turn produced a very narrow education and a narrow view of the world. The strict view of morality forced the teacher, the classroom's 'moral example', to fulfill all of the scrupulous principles society demanded. Teaching was in the past, as it is in the present, a public position that leaves educators with limited security of privacy. This is easily exemplified through the boarding of teachers with the families of their students. The teacher would live for designated amounts of time with families in the communities. Is there any less private manner for a teacher to live their life? Teachers were constantly under the eye of scrutiny. Since that time many laws limiting the aspects of a teacher's life have been abolished.

Degree of Operating Leverage

Operating Leverage:Operating Leverage is the term that describes the impact on operating income of a change in the level of output. Brigham says that â€Å"If a high percentage of a firm’s costs are fixed, and hence do not decline when demand decreases, this increases he company’s business risk. This factor is called operating leverage. If a high percentage of a firm’s total costs are fixed, the firm is said to have a high degree of operating leverage. The degree of operating leverage (DOL) is defined as the percentage change in operating income (or EBIT) that results from a given percentage change in sales†¦.In effect, the DOL is an index number which measures the effect of a change in sales [number of units] on operating income, or EBIT.†Autron:Generally, the higher the operating leverage, the more a company's income is affected by fluctuation in sales volume. The higher income vs. sales ratio results from a smaller portion of variable costs, which means the Company does not have to pay as much additional money for each unit produced or sold. The more significant the volume of sales, the more beneficial the investment in fixed costs becomes. Applying this principle the operating leverage of Autron is in a good position and any change in sales volume will not violently affect the income of this company.Ambertech:The position of this company with respect to the Operating Leverage is not advantageous to the company as the ratio is high. It signifies that the fixed costs are at a higher level. This means that any small change in sales volume will adversely affect the profitability of the company.Degree of Financial LeverageCompanyDegree of Financial LeverageFinancial Leverage:‘Financial leverage’ is the term used to describe the impact on returns of a change to the extent to which the firm’s assets are financed with borrowed money. In their 1997 article Buccino and Mckinley define operating leverage as the impa ct of a change in revenue on profit or cash flow. It arises, they say, whenever a firm can increase its revenues without a proportionate increase in operating expenses. Cash allocated to increasing revenue, such as marketing and business development expenditures, are quickly â€Å"consumed by high fixed expenses.†Autron:The degree to which a business is utilizing borrowed money. Companies that are highly leveraged may be at risk of bankruptcy if they are unable to make payments on their debt; they may also be unable to find new lenders in the future. Financial leverage is not always bad, however; it can increase the shareholders return on their investment and often there are tax advantages associated with borrowing. Applying this basic principle, with a low financial leverage, this company is utlising very lower level of borrowed funds. The interest burden on the company will naturally be less and the company is financing its operations from its own sources.Ambertech:As again st the company Autron, this company has high financial leverage which implies that the borrowings are more for this company and the company is running the risk of higher interest payments and meeting their debt commitments on dates.Combined Leverage:A leverage ratio that summarizes the combined effect the degree of operating leverage (DOL), and the degree of financial leverage has on earnings per share (EPS), given a particular change in sales. This ratio can be used to help determine the most optimal level of financial and operating leverage to use in any firm. This ratio can be very useful, as it summarizes the effects of combining both financial and operating leverage, and what effect this combination, or variations of this combination, has on the corporation's earningsAutron:It should be noted that a firm with a relatively high level of combined leverage is seen as  riskier than a firm with less combined leverage, as the  high leverage means more fixed costs to the firm. On the basis of the combined leverage ratio, it can be stated that the company Auton is less riskier as the leverage ratio of – 4.296 is highly advantageous to the firm signifying a lower level of fixed costs and better profitability. As we have seen in the Operating Leverage for this Company, any change in sales volume will result in more profits.Ambertech:In contrast to the company Autron, this company has a higher operating and financial leverage which has resulted in a higher combined leverage. This situation implies that the company’s fixed costs are very high leading to lower profitability. Any change in sales volume will adversely affect the earnings of the company.References:1.
